The System Wasn’t Built for People Like Us. That’s Why We’re Rebuilding It.

The founding manifesto: why two immigrant first-time homebuyers — Arjun Lalwani and Helly Shah — got flattened by the mortgage process and started building the company that became Ralo.

They say buying a home is part of the American dream. No one mentions the panic, pressure, and paperwork avalanche that hits the moment you start trying:

I Bought a Home and Immediately Regretted Being an Adult

I bought a home. I should’ve felt proud, accomplished, grown-up.

Instead, I felt small.

I didn’t feel smart, or prepared, or empowered. I felt like I had stumbled into something ancient and opaque, a process full of smiling faces who talked fast, made things sound urgent, and told me what I should do instead of explaining what I could do.

The lender wanted my business. The realtor wanted me to close. Everyone had an incentive. No one had my back.

So I didn’t shop around for my home loan. I didn’t negotiate. I just signed. And I know I’m not alone.

Hi, I’m the “Figure-It-Out” Friend

I moved to this country when I was 18. Alone. That’s not uncommon where I come from. I grew up in a privileged household, but the hand-holding stopped the day I stepped off that plane.

I figured it all out. College, job offers, savings, rent, taxes. I pieced together a life, brick by brick.

But somehow, even after all that… the mortgage process broke me.

Born to Be Wild, Forced to Figure Out Mortgages

Why is buying a home, the most expensive, emotional purchase of our lives, designed to be so overwhelming? Why is it normal to feel confused? Why are we expected to figure it out by Googling things late at night, hoping we don’t mess it up?

Why do most “online mortgage” platforms still work like lead farms, collecting your info and blasting it out to brokers who spam your inbox and call you during lunch breaks?

And most of all, why does no one explain how much you could be saving if you just had the tools, the space, and the clarity to shop around?

We Made Every Mistake So You Don’t Have To

My co-founder, Arjun, and I both lived this. Two immigrants, two first-time buyers, two people who thought we were financially savvy, absolutely flattened by a system that wasn’t designed to empower us.

So we’re building the thing we wish we had. We’re building Approval AI. Not just to make mortgages easier. But to make them fair. Transparent. Simple.

Because you deserve to understand what you’re signing. Because you deserve to feel proud, not powerless, when you buy your first home. Because the system wasn’t built for people like us. But we’re here now. And we’re building something better.
